Patricia Engel is the author of Vida and It’s Not Love, It’s Just Paris, forthcoming from Grove Press in August 2013.

Vida, her acclaimed debut, was a New York Times Notable Book of 2010, a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway Fiction Award, New York Public Library Young Lions Fiction Award, and Paterson Fiction Award, winner of the International Latino Book Award, Florida Book Award, and Independent Publisher Book Award, and longlisted for The Story Prize and Dayton Literary Peace Prize. Additionally, Vida was a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers selection, a New York Times Editors’ Choice, and named a Best Book of the Year by NPR, Barnes & Noble, Latina Magazine, and Los Angeles Weekly.

Patricia’s fiction has appeared in The Atlantic, A Public Space, Boston Review, Guernica, and Harvard Review among other publications, and her nonfiction has appeared in Black Book and Glamour. Her stories have received awards including the Boston Review Fiction Prize, and fellowships from the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, Key West Literary Seminar, Norman Mailer Writer’s Colony, Hedgebrook, Ucross, and the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs. Included in the “Best New Writers” series by The Daily Beast, Patricia was also named a “Latina Who Shaped 2010″ by The New York Daily News, one of Poder360 Business Magazine’s “20 Under 40 Up and Coming Latinos,” and a “Top New Latino/a Author” by LatinoStories.com.

Born to Colombian parents and raised in New Jersey, Patricia earned her undergraduate degree at New York University and her MFA at Florida International University. She teaches creative writing at the University of Miami.

Vida, « la vie » en espagnol, c’est celle de Sabina, dont les parents colombiens se sont installés dans le New Jersey. Sabina, que les gamins appellent Chocolat ou l’Indienne, parce que sa peau n’est pas aussi blanche que la leur… Sabina, que nous suivons de New York à Miami ou Bogota, avec ses amis, sa famille, son frère, ses amours, tous ceux qui à un moment ou un autre ont compté dans son parcours. Une vie qu’elle évoque en neuf séquences, neuf étapes de la transformation d’une adolescente en femme. Un premier roman unanimement salué par la critique américaine.

Mmm... je suis plutôt mitigée à propos de ce roman. Sur le fond, la vie de Sabina et ses difficultés à trouver sa place, sont intéressantes. Malheureusement, je n'ai pas apprécié la forme. L'histoire est découpée en neuf courts épisodes de la vie de Sabina, sans suivre l'ordre chronologique. Et même si certains épisodes sont très émouvants, cette fragmentation m'a empêchée d'entrer vraiment dans l'histoire. J'ai eu l'impression de lire un recueil de nouvelles plutôt qu'un roman, et j'ai retrouvé cette sensation de survoler l'histoire sans m'attacher aux personnages, faute de bien les connaitre. La preuve, c'est qu'à peine quelques jours après ma lecture, j'ai déjà presque tout oublié.
Un peu déçue donc, car, sous une forme plus traditionnelle, j'aurais, je pense, beaucoup aimé.
